Music videos and genre

Presumptions!

When looking at a album cover which you've never heard of what do you expect the music genre to be?
In class the examples below were given to use to see what we believed...

Izzy Bizus 'White tiger'
From the close head shot of thew singer to the font of the writing you expect this to be in the pop music genre.

Catfish and the Bottlemen 'Twice'
The plain black background with the 'random' white alligator could be seen as an image for the band or a link to a certain song. The music I would think is on this album would be indie as its well known for indie pop bands to not have a photo of the band as their cover.

AlunaGeorge 'Mean what i mean'

This cover looked very basic as it was all white with a very diverse outline of the artist on the cover this gives the idea that the music on this album is dance music or techno.

Is genre a problem?

When artists music fits a genre the audience has a stereotypical image that they think the artist should look like. However, I believe that these stereotypes aren't defiant because they can grow as an artist and so does your audience.
It can be dangerous for some artists to change their look and their music genre as a lot of audiences listen to the artist because of their music style and what they sound like so if the artist decides to change their style or genre then they are likely to lose their followers . However, examples like Taylor Swift who turned from country singer to pop singer and still changing took that risk and it paid off rather because her fans followed her from her previous genre as they like the talent or are just to see what shes moved on to. Although, I believe that the bigger factor to Taylor's successful swap is that she moved into a very popular genre.

As a homework for thew whole class we were given the task to find out about a new music genre we had never heard of. Mr Welch (Our media teacher) each gave up a genre and we had to do some research. The next day using a Powerpoint online all of my classmates and I had to put our research into slides, so we could share what we had learnt with everyone. Below is the Powerpoint which has all of our genre research on.
